Back on Track: How to Reset Your Fitness Routine After Summer
Summer has a habit of shaking up even the best routines. Whether it’s been holidays, heatwaves, extra childcare, or simply slowing down a little, August often leaves us feeling a bit out of rhythm.
If you’ve lost your fitness mojo recently, you’re not alone and more importantly, you’re not doing anything wrong.
At Sanders Fitness, we’ve seen it every year: September rolls in with a mix of “where did the summer go?” and “I really need to get back to it.” So, if you’re starting to feel the pull to move again, rebuild your strength, or just reconnect with some structure — now’s a great time.
Here’s how to make that restart feel simple, realistic, and pressure-free:
1. Ditch the guilt
Let’s get this out of the way: taking a break isn’t failure, it’s part of life. Fitness isn’t about perfection; it’s about consistency over the long haul. You haven’t gone backwards. You’ve just hit pause. You’re allowed.
2. Don’t go from 0 to 100
Trying to do too much too soon is a fast track to feeling sore, fed up, and more likely to quit. Instead, think in terms of “build” not “blast”.
Start with:
• 2–3 gym sessions per week
• A focus on form, not speed
• Walks, stretches, and sleep as part of your routine reset
3. Book it in like you would an appointment
Treat your sessions like something you wouldn’t cancel. Even 30 minutes counts. Put it in your diary. Let your family or partner know. The more you schedule it, the more it becomes yours again.
4. Find your motivation – not someone else’s
Some people are chasing weight loss. Others want energy, stress relief, or to feel strong again. Reconnect with your personal “why” it will help you stay focused on what matters most to you, not what Instagram says you should want.
5. Come back to what feels good
You don’t need to punish yourself with punishing workouts. Start with what you enjoy. A gym session with music in your ears. A small group class with friendly faces. A solo strength session where you can get into your own zone. If it feels good, you’ll want to do it again.
